We are inundated with news on a daily basis. Newspapers, television news programmes, talk shows and social media convey information in real time, and all contribute to shaping our perceptions \u2013 our collective imagination \u2013 on which we rely to interpret and make sense of social and economic phenomena. However, the sheer number of sources is such that, on closer inspection, the volume of information produced exceeds our capacity for analysis. It is overwhelming, excessive and often redundant. Furthermore, the speed at which news unfolds is such that we struggle to process it, keep up with it and take it all in. The end result is that we are often left feeling disoriented when faced with various phenomena. Indeed, the perceptions we construct for ourselves do not always correspond to the objective facts. And we struggle to let go of them, even when reality contradicts them. In recent years in particular, as a result of the sheer volume of information, there has been a widespread tendency among the media \u2013 though not exclusively \u2013 to highlight above all those aspects that, more than others, grab our attention: from violent and criminal incidents to gossip; from corruption and malpractice to curious news stories\u2026<\/p>\n
